The Minnesota Twins signed former Los Angeles Angels closer Hansel Robles to a one-year contract on Tuesday.

The deal is worth $2 million, according to The Associated Press.

Robles saved 23 games in 27 chances in 2019 when he went 5-1 with a 2.48 ERA in a 71 appearances. Last season, however, he struggled with a 10.26 ERA in 18 appearances, finishing 0-2 with one save in three chances.

The Angels recently designated Hansel Robles for assignment and he will pursue another bullpen gig with the Minnesota Twins.
28-year-old right-handed reliever Hansel Robles has signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Minnesota Twins with the potential for an additional $500,000 in incentives, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Hansel Robles was the closer for a short period of time with the Halos and was fantastic in the 2019 season. Robles posted a 2.48 ERA and 2.88 FIP across the campaign, with an excellent strikeout to walk ratio that ended around 4.69 strikeouts per walk. The right-hander saw a tremendous fall from grace in the shortened 2020 season as his walk rate ballooned 6.8 percent and his strikeout rate dipped a bit. He ended the season with just 16 2/3 innings to his ledger, but he allowed a whopping 19 earned runs in his limited work.

While Robles was great in 2019 and horrifyingly bad in 2020, he is still a pitcher with a world of potential in the back end of a bullpen. The Minnesota Twins will now try and revitalize his career and capitalize on the Angels designating him for assignment.

There is still a lot to like about Robles. While many fans saw his 2020 and dreaded when he came on the mound, many also remember his lockdown ninth inning presence in 2019. If Robles could have returned to form in 2021 like his 2019 season, the Angels could have used him as a setup man behind the recently-acquired right-hander Raisel Iglesias.

Robles is only 30 years old so he still has some time to correct himself after a so-so start to his major league career with the New York Mets.

The Angels’ top options behind Raisel Iglesias at the moment are Mike Mayers, Ty Buttrey, and Alex Claudio. Mayers had a solid 2020 season, Buttrey has a ton of upside, and Claudio has been a very steady relief presence the past few seasons. The Angels bullpen is not star-studded by any means, but it is not something to be afraid of as a fan. Moves need to be made to improve it, but signing a handful of relievers to too-expensive contracts is not the way to go. Finding bargain bin relievers with loads of potential and then spending money on free agent starting pitching is it.

He wasn’t tendered a contract by the Angels this offseason, making him a free agent. The Angels traded for Cincinnati Reds closer Raisel Iglesias this offseason.

Robles will join the back end of a Twins bullpen led by closer Taylor Rogers, who has 39 saves in 47 chances over the past two seasons.

Robles, 30, has a 3.91 ERA in his career over 313 appearances with the New York Mets and Angels in six major league seasons.

The Minnesota Twins have made another move, this time bringing aboard back-end starting pitching depth for a team that sorely needed it. The team signed J.A. Happ to a one-year, $8 million deal yesterday, per Jeff Passan:

As with every Twins move, most recently the Hansel Robles signing, we break down the deal and grade the Twins for the player they signed. We’ll start off with how Happ fits, then talk about what he brings and if the deal was worth it.

As our contributor Theodore Tollefson wrote about, the Twins likely are adding Happ with the expectation that he be a fourth or fifth starter, play consistent innings, and help this team out in what should be a very close division fight between the White Sox and Twins.

Arraez was the unquestioned starter in 2020, but the current plan is for Polanco to slide over from shortstop and assume the starting second-base role. Arraez will play in a multipositional capacity and move around between infield positions, with the possibility of additional appearances in left field. The Twins checked in with both Polanco and Arraez about the Simmons deal — and both are on board with the plan.

This doesn’t push either Polanco or Arraez into uncharted territory. Though Polanco has almost exclusively played shortstop in the Majors, he played nearly as many games at second base (200) as at short (343) during his Minor League career, though the last time he saw regular action at second was in 2016. Meanwhile, Arraez played mostly second base in the Minors, but moved around according to need during his ’19 rookie season, when he played 17 games at third base, eight at shortstop and 21 in left field.

All this will be worth it for the Twins, because Polanco has graded out as one of the worst defensive shortstops in the Majors throughout his career and has been worth negative defensive runs saved in every season at the Major League level. Meanwhile, Simmons has been worth the most defensive runs saved of not only any shortstop, but also among all MLB players over the past decade. Polanco has been worth minus-34 DRS over his career, while Simmons has been plus-191.

Simmons’ addition means that the Twins’ up-the-middle defenders — catcher Ryan Jeffers, Simmons and center fielder Byron Buxton — are about as good as it gets in the Majors.

Will the Twins be able to get Arraez enough at-bats?

In essence, this move means that the Twins have replaced Marwin Gonzalez with Arraez, who might not be as good of a defender but has a better bat and is nearly a decade younger. If the Twins’ usage of Gonzalez over the last two seasons was any indication, finding playing time for Arraez won’t be a problem.

Consider, for example, that Gonzalez played in 53 of the Twins’ 60 games last season, tied for third-most on the team behind Eddie Rosario and Polanco. Injuries are a way of life in any season, and Twins manager Rocco Baldelli has also shown the desire to give his starters regular days off to keep them fresh throughout the grind of the season.

Happ, who didn’t exhaust his rookie limits until he was 26, is now 38, so no one should look at this signing and think he will return to his 2016 peak. With that being said, you know what you’re getting in Happ: consistency.

Happ has made at least 25 starts, pitched 140 innings, and struck out 130 batters in nine of the past eleven seasons (2020 excluded). That’s remarkable consistency, and if the Twins can get him to anything close to that, he’s a great fifth guy.

In addition, he’s moving to a really good spot for pitchers in Minnesota. The Twins have a solid defense when healthy, as Josh Donaldson, Byron Buxton, Max Kepler, Ryan Jeffers, and Mitch Garver are all plus defenders. That doesn’t even account for him escaping the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium for the friendly confines of Target Field. He’ll have a solid year.

As far as money goes, $8 million is about right. He’s getting less than most pitchers are this offseason, despite him having a better track record of success. He isn’t getting any younger, which led to his availability, but it’s hard to really fault this move.

We knew the Twins would go after cheaper guys to fill out the back of their rotation, just like they did last year with Homer Bailey ($7 million) and Rich Hill ($3 million). Happ is better than both of those guys.

The best part of this move is Happ has been in the playoffs. A lot:

Last thing I’ll add on Happ. He’s pitched in 15 playoff games and has a combined ERA of 3.21 in the ALCS, NLCS, and World Series games he’s been in. He’s got a ring. Could be nice.

— Puckett’s Pond (@PuckettsPond) January 20, 2021

To break the 18-game playoff losing streak, you need players like Happ on the back of your roster, encouraging a Twins core that has struggled on the biggest stage. He’s a World Series champion. This move helps.

As easy as it is to hate on the move for not being big enough for the fans, this is a really good move. If he stays healthy, which seems highly likely despite his age, the Twins added a really good back of the rotation guy.

The Texas Rangers announced today that they declined their 2021 contract option on Corey Kluber, making him a free agent. The Rangers also announced that righthanded pitcher Ian Gibaut was claimed on waivers by the Minnesota Twins, and righthanded pitcher Luke Farrell has cleared waivers and been outrighted.

Kluber’s 2021 team option was for $18 million, with a $1 million buyout. The Rangers only got one inning of work out of him in the pandemic-abbreviated 2020 season before losing him for the year with a shoulder injury. The Rangers have expressed interest at having Kluber return, but for now, he is a free agent.

The Rangers acquired the former Cy Young winner last winter from the Cleveland Indians for Emmanuel Clase and Delino DeShields. This has been a lose-lose trade thusfar, as the Rangers got just a single inning from Kluber, DeShields was a disappointment in 2020 and appears to be a non-tender candidate, and Clase didn’t pitch in 2020 due to a PED suspension.

Since the completion of the World Series, the Twins’ roster has already seen change.

On Wednesday morning, their impending free agents became free agents. That includes Nelson Cruz, Alex Avila, Ehire Adrianza, Jake Odorizzi, Rich Hill, Tyler Clippard, Trevor May.

On Wednesday, the Twins bought out the final season of Sergio Romo’s 2021 contract, making him a free agent as well.

On Friday, the Twins claimed two recently DFAd players, RHP Ian Gibaut and LHP Brandon Waddell. That puts the current Twins 40-man roster at 34 players.

The right-hander was the Rays 11th round pick in 2015 out of Tulane University. He made his MLB debut with one game for Tampa in 2019. Before the July trade deadline, he was sent to the Rangers. He pitched in nine more games out of the Texas bullpen. This season with the Rangers, he pitched in 14 games, though just 12 1/3 innings.

In his 24 MLB games, he is 1-2 with a 5.84 ERA. In 24 2/3 innings, he has walked 17 but struck out 28 batters.

Gibaut is a big kid, standing 6-3 and weighing in at 250 pounds. He throws a fastball that has averaged 95.3 mph. He also throws a slider in the mid-to-upper 80s, and a mid-80s changeup.

Here is a 6 1/2 minute review of ONE of Gibaut’s pitches in the big leagues.

The southpaw was the fifth round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2015 from the University of Virginia. He split both 2018 and 2019 between AA Altoona and AAA Indianapolis. He made his MLB debut in 2020 with just two games and 3 1/3 innings pitched. He gave up just one run on two hits and a walk, and he struck out two batters.

While there isn’t much big-league sample, his fastball clocked in at 93 mph. He throws a lot of sliders (41%) at 86 mph, and also throws a changeup.

Here is some video of Waddell’s MLB debut:

Farrell and Gibaut both appeared to be likely 40 man casualties this winter. Farrell missed most of 2019 due to a broken jaw suffered in spring training, but stuck around as a potential versatile swing man for 2020. He threw just 5.1 IP in 4 games for the Rangers this year, however, and fell out of the mix of pitching options quickly.

Gibaut was acquired by Texas from the Rays in July, 2019, for a PTBNL or cash, was non-tendered after the season, and then was signed to a minor league deal. An impressive summer camp landed him on the active roster to start the season, but inconsistency of command led to a 7.30 ERA in 14 relief appearances, with his most notable outing being when he threw behind Manny Machado after the infamous Fernando Tatis Jr. grand slam, leading to a suspension.

The 40 man roster is now at 32, though it will go to 35 when Jose Leclerc, Joe Palumbo and Brock Burke are activated from the 45 day injured list.
